Info dept to set up 2,000 1Malaysia communities this year

SUNGAI PETANI: The Information Department is targeting to establish 2,000 1Malaysia communities this year in the effort to strengthen racial unity.

Its director-general, Ibrahim Abd Rahman, said there were 1,200 communities nationwide and 30 per cent of them comprised various races.

“This year, we are targeting an additional 800 1Malaysia communities which would consist of various races such as Malay, Chinese, Siamese and Indian, for example in housing areas with mixed communities,” he said.

Ibrahim spoke to reporters after launching the community service of the National Service (NS) Training Programme at the Pantai Merdeka public field near here Saturday.

The NS communities were launched simultaneously in 73 camps nationwide Saturday for the first group trainees of the 9/2012 series. –Bernama
