BALIK PULAU:Teachers in the country will not receive automatic promotions, but instead must also undergo interviews and other relevant processes, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.

Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said the methods of promotion for teachers would be finalised after meetings between the government and the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) were concluded.

“We have taken into consideration all aspects on teachers’ wellbeing, but the final decision has yet to be reached because the matter has been taken to the attention of the Public Service Department, besides the ongoing meetings between union representatives and Cuepacs,” he said.

The Deputy Prime Minister said this to reporters after attending the 1Malaysia people’s feast at Kampung Permatang Tepi, Simpang Empat, here Saturday.

Muhyiddin said the issue of promotion for teachers, however, was expected to be solved very soon.

He was commenting on a media report which stated that approximately 15,000 graduate teachers would receive a promotion to a higher grade once the review on the Public Service New Remuneration (SBPA) scheme was completed in April. –Bernama
