FIRST TITLE: Mimi Huo won her first pool title by beating Valen Lai 7-3 in the final of the 1st Ladies 9Ball Open Championship last Saturday.

KUCHING: Mimi Huo outclassed newcomer Valen Lai 7-3 in the final to clinch her first pool title at the 1st Ladies 9Ball Pool Open Championship held at Kuching Pool Club centre at Premier 101 Commercial Centre last Saturday night.

Being seven months pregnant was no obstacle for Huo who raced to a 3-0 lead before Lai struck back to take the fourth frame.

Huo then went ahead 4-1 and Lai won the next frame to narrow the gap to 4-2.

The former looked set to wrap up the game when she won the next two frames to stretch her lead to 6-2.

But she committed a mistake in failing to pot the nine ball in the eighth frame, conceding a point to Lai.

Playing a more cautious game in the tenth frame, Huo wasted little time in winning 7-3.

The champion collected RM600 and a trophy and Lai had to be contented with RM300 and a trophy.

Semi-finalists Jess Heu and Joanne Thomas each pocketed RM100 and a trophy.

As for the losing quarterfinalists Gianina Ginnie Kon, Patricia Tan, Flora Fan and Lee Sur Hui, they each received RM50.

Kuching Pool Club president Lee Juk Chiang gave away the prizes. The main objective of the championship is to promote and popularise pool among the women players in and around Kuching.

Sponsor for the event is Tac Part Enterprise, a dealer in pool and snooker tables and accessories.
