CHARDON: The 17-year-old accused of a shooting rampage at an Ohio school confessed to police and said he had shot his victims at random, a prosecutor said on Tuesday as the suspect appeared in court for the first time.

A judge granted a request that the suspect, TJ Lane, be detained for another 15 days pending expected charges over the shooting early on Monday of five students, three of whom have died, in the cafeteria of Chardon High School.

‘Once in custody Lane was advised of his rights, he confessed to taking the .22 pistol to school along with a knife,’ prosecutor David Joyce told a juvenile court in Chardon.

‘He admitted he fired 10 rounds into a group of students, that he did not know the students, and that he chose them randomly.’ Judge Timothy Grendell imposed a gag order preventing attorneys from speaking about the case and banned the media from taking photographs of the suspect’s face or those of his family members and legal guardian. -AFP
