Cycle Fest 2012 to boost cycling in Sarawak

KUCHING: Cycling enthusiasts are in for a special treat as the highly anticipated Cycle Fest Sarawak 2012 has been scheduled to be held here from March 24-25.

There will be a hive of fun-filled activities including fun rides on the first day of the event centred at the Borneo Convention Centre and catering for the primary and secondary school childrens, families and the general public of all ages. The Cycle Fest is a joint effort of Sarawak Cycling Association and Revel Asia Sdn Bhd.

“The first day event covers races and fun rides over various distances from a short 100m to a longer distance of over 10km at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK). This will be followed by the criterium event for racing bicycles. Focusing on speed-racing around an approximately 2.5km route, the criterium event will see its winners determined by the fastest riders to cross the pre-determined distance,” said Revel Asia representative Kenny Goh to The Borneo Post.

“On the second day, two exciting road races will take place. The first is the 40km ride HSL Bako Challenge which will go around Bako area and the other race is the 110 kilometres QC Damai Challenge, a race to Damai beach and then back to BCCK via Bako. The first race on the second day is open to all forms of road­-worthy or race bicycles inclusive of mountain-bikes (MTB). The QC Damai Challenge race on the other hand will only open to competitive race bicycles,” informed Goh.

All race hospitality considerations has been made from strategically placed water-stations and having a team of experienced marshalls and race crews and, neutral support vehicles. Trophies as well as attractive cash prizes awaits the winners of each race categories. A specially designed cycling jerseys are also available for all registered participants of the event. All distance race finishers will also be given medals, goodie-bags as well as goods from participating sponsors.

The cycling event has the full support from SCA and Malaysia National Cycling Federation, and was recognised as a new and exciting sports event by the Sarawak State Government via the Sarawak Tourism Board and Ministry of Social and Urban Development.

Youth Development and Housing Assistant Minister Abdul Karim Hamzah was also present yesterday during a meeting between his ministry and the event organisers. He hoped that the Cycle Fest would be made an annual event for Sarawak.

“We planned the Cycle Fest to be an exciting annual event. I foresee its growth and recognition beyond our borders as the event could possibly attract international racers and cycling enthusiasts from around the region,” Abdul Karim said.
