I will do my best to win back Sibu — Temenggong Lau

SIBU: Temenggong Vincent Lau, who was recommended to represent BN in Sibu parliamentary constituency, vows to do his level best to recapture the hot seat from the opposition.

“If (the recommendation is) endorsed by BN top leadership, I will do my best to wrest back Sibu parliamentary seat although the task is no walk in the park,” Lau told The Borneo Post when contacted yesterday, following the unanimous decision of SUPP Sibu branch to recommended him and Lanang MP Datuk Tiong Thai King to represent BN in the coming 13th general election, expected to be held soon.

Sibu parliamentary seat used to be a BN stronghold before Datuk Robert Lau, who won it for BN-SUPP, passed away on April 9, 2010 due to an illness.

He was then holding the post of deputy minister of transport.

In the ensuing by-election, BN-SUPP candidate Robert Lau Hui Yew lost narrowly to state DAP chairman Richard Wong Ho Leng by 398 votes.

Ho Leng garnered 18,845 votes while Hui Yew polled 18,447 votes. Independent candidate Narawi Haron managed to obtain only 232 votes and lost his deposit.

Unfazed by the past result, Vincent Lau reiterated that he would put his best foot forward and work hard to bring glory to BN.

Describing the recommen-dation as a great honour, he revealed that he was willing to give up his post (of Temenggong) to better serve the people.

“If I am nominated or the recommendation is endorsed by BN top leadership for me to stand in Sibu parliamentary, I feel that I can do more for the people.

“While I can serve people in my capacity as a community leader, I feel if I win in the coming general election, I will be able to do more to serve the people and bring more benefits to Sibu in particular and Sarawak in general,” Lau said.

He added: “On that score, even if I have to give up the post, I will not regret.”

Setting the record straight, he said he was prepared to take up the challenge not for personal glory or benefit as “I truly want to serve the people and help bring better quality of life.”

As such, he hoped that the people here would give him their support. He expressed optimism that BN would still be able to form the government despite them facing a great challenge in this coming election.
