KUALA LUMPUR: MCA is planning to set up a technical college to produce a pool of skilled workers, said its president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.

Chua said a committee, headed by MCA’s Vocational Education Development Committee chairman Tan Sri Dr Fong Chan Onn, would come up with the proposal.

The working paper on the proposed technical college would be finalised by the end of this month for MCA to deliberate and decide on the next course of action, he said.

“If we look at the economic transformation programme launched by the Prime Minister for 2010-2020, we are supposed to create three million jobs, and of  this three millions jobs, 50 per cent require professionals and skilled workers.

“We are of the view technical education is becoming more important and if the millions of jobs to be created require many profesisonals and skilled workers, Malaysia has to produced the needed human capital fast,” he told a news conference after attending the first session of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman’s (UTAR) 14th convocation ceremony at Wisma MCA here yesterday.

Chua said MCA, as a political party, had done more in the training of talent compared to any other political parties, citing examples as UTAR and Kolej Tunku Abdul Rahman (KTAR) which had produced more that 185,000 graduates.

The convocation celebrates the triumph of 1,322 students graduating from 39 Bachelors Honours programme, eight in Master’s degree programmes and one in the PhD programme. — Bernama
