PADANG SERAI: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom wants enforcement on the display of the halal logo, which will come into force on July 1, to be more on the educational approach.

He said the enforcers, who would be trained by the Domestic Trade, Consumerism and Cooperatives Ministry, must act wisely before bringing offenders to book.

“We must not be harsh but give some leeway to companies which previously had paid for the old halal certification,” he told reporters after launching the Barisan Nasional’s election machinery for the Lunas constituency here on Saturday.

Under the new halal logo display requirements which will be effective July 1, entreprenuers who fail to display the halal certificate and logo issued by the Malaysian Islamic Development Department and state religious departments, will face imprisonment and a fine. — Bernama
