SANDAKAN: The project to upgrade Labuk Road from Mile 8 to Gum-Gum is now in progress.
Member of parliament for Libaran, Datuk Juslie Ajirol, said the estimated cost to upgrade the 10-kilometer road into two lanes was RM100 million, and was 10 per cent completed.
“Construction of this road was a bit delayed due to technical problems arising mainly from encroachment on people’s land that involved houses and gardens,” he said.
Juslie said it was a common problem when expanding roads and took time to implement.
“However, despite the problems, implementation will be carried out as planned,” he told reporters.
The construction of the two-way lane from Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu, starting from Mile 8 to Gum-Gum, and from Tamparuli to Ranau, is under the Tenth Malaysia Plan.
“Two more road projects will be implemented in the next Malaysia Plan, from Ranau to Telupid, a distance of 90 kilometers, and from Gum-Gum to Telupid, a distance of about 130 kilometers,” he said.
