KUCHING: Earth Hour will be observed on Saturday (March 31) this year and the city has started the run-up to the global event with an ‘Earth Hour 2012 Cycling Team Challenge’.

“The Damai Beach Resort’s Cycling Team Challenge is set to be held on Saturday (March 31). The race is organised in conjunction with the ‘Earth Hour 2012’ celebration and will be flagged-off at the Kuching Esplanade, Jalan Gambier.

The finishing point will be at the Hilltop Wing, Damai Beach Resort, Pantai Damai, Santubong,” informed Caroline Yeo, the Business Development director of Damai Beach Resort.

This 40-kilometre cycling race is jointly organised by Damai Beach Resort, Kuching Cycling Recreation Club (KOOCH), Persatuan Berbasikal Sarawak and Kuching North City Commission (DBKU).

The race is also organised to promote healthy living, riding safely and the reduction of fossil-fuel pollution towards environmental conservation.

“Every year Damai Beach Resort aim to take Earth Hour to a new level. This year, over 171 cyclists have registered for the race and will demonstrate their support for ‘Earth Hour 2012’ as they cycled across the streets of Kuching and off to Damai.

“The participants are a diverse mix of demographics comprising tourists, resort guests, executives, school and college students and even home makers.

“Adopting cycling as a way of commuting is a step in the right direction of a sustainable way of living,” revealed Yeo.

The popularity of the race has drawn a list of heavyweights to sponsor the event and these includes Sara Worldwide Vacations Berhad, 100Plus, Red Bull, Nestle, Sarawak Cultural Village, Infografik, Sara Urusharta Sdn Bhd, Kuching Hilton and 360 Hotel.

“Attractive prizes are up for grabs by participants of the cycle race.

“Other exciting side events to be held at the Damai Beach Resort are blood donation drive in the morning, dinner and show in the evening, flash mob performance and of course, the ‘black-out’ at 8.30pm-9.30pm,” said Yeo.

Interested participants can call Elizabeth Wood at 016- 8781510 for further information and registration.
