MIRI: The Sarawak River’s Board (SRB) has completed clearing and widening work on the Baram River tributary at Kampung Muhibbah, allowing for smoother and safer passage for fishing boats.

Assistant Minister of Communication Datuk Lee Kim Shin, who inspected the project yesterday, praised SRB for its prompt action.

Last January, fishermen from the village voiced concern about using the tributary to get to the Baram River and South China Sea to fish.

They said debris and illegal structures such as poles had made the tributary narrow and shallow.

This made the area collision-prone as only one boat could pass through at a time and fishermen were also forced to wait for high tide.

“After clearing work was done on the tributary, it gives a smooth and safe passage for the boats,” said Lee, who is also Senadin assemblyman.

“After getting rid of the illegal structures and debris, three boats can pass through the tributary at one time without having to fear colliding with each other.

“The river bed is now deeper and they don’t have wait for high tide.”

However, Lee noted that some sections further down the tributary were clogged by aquatic vegetation and debris, and suggested SRB and the villagers clear the area.
