DPM wants Umno meetings to focus on poll

MUAR: Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin wants all meetings of Umno branches and wings, namely the Youth, Wanita and Puteri movements to focus on preparations to face the 13th general election.

He said that as the general election was drawing closer, preparations to face the poll must be given priority in all debates carried out.

“I appeal that during this period before the poll, discussions and debates at the branch level must focus on how we can win the election, how the polling stream under our care can achieve better votes than that in 2008.

“Don’t discuss other things, don’t discuss on drains and departments because we often discuss such things,” he said.

He said this in his speech when opening the simultaneous annual meeting of Umno branches, Youth, Puteri and Wanita wings in the Pagoh division yesterday.

Also present at the meeting were his wife, Puan Seri Noraini Abdul Rahman and Pagoh Umno divison deputy head, Datuk Mohd Tahir Taat.

Muhyiddin, who is also the deputy prime minister and Pagoh Umno division head, said each branch should resolve whatever problems faced so that they would not affect the focus on facing the general election.

He said the situation for the general election this time around was vastly different from the elections faced in the past.

“Remember that the scenario for the general election this time is very different from the past and much more challenging.

“The situation this time is unlike the previous one, the activities of the opposition are much more intense. They bring leaders from outside to give ceramah, spread lies here and there whereas they themselves have more problems than we do,” he said.

Muhyiddin said the challenges now were also different with the existence of numerous new information technologies applied by the opposition to spread slanders that could influence the people.

These included lies on the increase in the prices of goods whereas the government had provided various programmes to ease the burden of the people such as the subsidy on fuel and sugar as well as the 1Malaysia retail shops (KR1M).

As such, he said, every Umno branch and wing must carry out more thorough activities especially in getting closer to the people.

With the efforts carried out by the government all this while, he hoped Umno and the Barisan Nasional could achieve much better result than in the last general election.

Earlier, the deputy prime minister handed out a contribution of RM3,000 each to 120 widows and police pensioners in the Pagoh parliamentary constituency. — Bernama
