Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong XIV

KUALA LUMPUR: In conjunction with the installation of Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong XIV on April 11, 2012, the Istana Negara issued His Majesty’s profile as follows:

His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong XIV, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah, was born on Nov 28, 1927.

His Majesty received his early education at the Titi Gajah Malay School before furthering his studies at the Sultan Abdul Hamid College, Alor Setar, Kedah.

His deep interest in the field of knowledge and education spurred him to leave for the United Kingdom to pursue studies in Social Science and Public Administration at the Wadham College, Oxford, London, in early 1952.

While in the United Kingdom, His Majesty was appointed the Raja Muda of Kedah on Aug 6, 1949.

On his return, upon the completion of his studies abroad in 1955, His Majesty served at the Alor Setar District Office, and later at the Kedah State Treasury.

On March 9, 1957, His Majesty was appointed the Regent of Kedah when then-Sultan of Kedah, Duli Yang Maha Mulia Sultan Badlishah, was abroad between March 12 and July 3, 1957.

By the will and grace of Allah S.W.T., His Majesty ascended to the throne of the state of Kedah on July 14, 1958 following the demise of his father, His Royal Highness Almarhum Sultan Badlishah.

His Majesty was officially installed as the Sultan of Kedah Darul Aman on Feb 20, 1959.

Accordingly, by the will and volition of Allah S.W.T., on Sept 21, 1965 His Majesty was elected by the Conference of Rulers as the Fourth Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong; while in 1970, the Conference of Rulers appointed him as the Fifth Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, and served from 1970 to 1975.

The swearing-in ceremony took place on Sept 21, 1970.

His Majesty was formally installed as the Fifth Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Feb 20, 1971 in a ceremony steeped in tradition at the national capital.

His Majesty held the post until Sept 21, 1975.

He married Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Almarhumah Tuanku Hajah Bahiyah Binti Almarhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman on March 10, 1956 at Istana Seri Menanti, Negeri Sembilan Darul Khusus.

She was the eldest princess of the
Yang Di-Pertuan Besar Negeri Sembilan at that time (later the First Yang di-Pertuan Agong of the Federation of Malaya).

His Majesty has three princesses: – Yang Teramat Mulia Tunku Panglima Besar Datuk Seri Diraja Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz Binti Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah (1966); – Yang Teramat Mulia Datuk Seri Diraja Tunku Soraya Binti Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah (1961); and – Yang Teramat Mulia Tunku Salina Binti Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah (1961) (passed away on Aug 31, 1991).

He also married Yang Mulia Che Puan Hajah Haminah Binti Hamidun on Dec 25, 1975.

Her Majesty Tuanku Hajah Haminah was born in Bagan Serai, Perak Darul Ridzuan.

On Aug 26, 2003, Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Almarhumah Tuanku Sultanah Hajah Bahiyah passed away at Istana Kuala Chegar, Anak Bukit, Alor Setar, Kedah.

On Jan 9, 2004, Yang Mulia Che Puan Hajah Haminah Binti Hamidun was proclaimed as the new Sultanah of Kedah with the title
Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Tuanku Sultanah Hajah Haminah Binti Hamidun.

His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong XIV Almu’tasimu Billahi Muhibbuddin Tuanku Alhaj Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Ibni
Almarhum Sultan Badlishah celebrated a Silver Jubilee in 1983 in conjunction with the 25th Anniversary of his rule.

In July 2008, His Majesty celebrated the Silver Jubilee, marking the 50th year of his ascension to the throne. — Bernama
