CHECKMATE: Abdillah (second right) moves a ‘knight’ to launch the state-level MSSS Chess Tournament in Mukah yesterday.

MUKAH: State director of education Abdillah Adam yesterday urged chess players representing Sarawak School Sports Council (MSSS) to train harder in order to win more national and regional tournaments so as to improve their national rankings under Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM).

Abdillah made the call in his speech as guest-of-honour of the opening ceremony of the state-level MSSS Chess Tournament 2012 held at Dewan Suarah Mesra, Mukah yesterday.

“Sarawak is currently ranked third, behind Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, under the ranking system for the game of chess in 2011 by MSSM. I congratulate all chess players from Sarawak who performed well in national and regional tournaments over the years.

I urge more students to play chess in order to enhance their intelligence and thinking,” Abdillah.

The chess tournament from April 12-14 saw some 284 participants from 10 divisions (except Kapit) competing in the U-12, U-15 and U-18 boys and girls categories.
