SIBU: Temenggong Vincent Lau, tipped to represent BN in Sibu parliamentary constituency this coming 13th General Election (GE), stands a good chance to win the fiercely-contested seat.

A veteran political observer who asked not to be identified said the ground support favours him (Lau), and he was the right man for the job.

“You see, although his candidacy is yet to be approved by the top BN leadership, the response I got from public members is that they are happy with Vincent.

“People I talk to believe he has a good chance to contest in Sibu parliamentary, and that chances of him winning are quite high,” he told thesundaypost yesterday.

Asked why he said so, the political observer reasoned that Lau had served in the capacity of a community leader for a long time, making him well connected to the people.

Even without political affiliation, Lau was well known to the people.

“He is not just a face in the crowd; people look up to him because of his work. His charitable work speaks volume of the man, and his contribution to Chinese education is immense,” the observer noted.

Meanwhile, a longhouse chief of Bawang Assan Penghulu James Semilan noted Lau was matured in politics, making him an ideal candidate to take the fight to the opposition.

“Being a community leader, he is well versed with people’s expectations and problems. This is important because people want to be connected with their leaders,” James said.

Among others, Lau had a keen interest in the welfare of people, including his involvement in Chinese education and that of mission schools.

“In my opinion, we should rally behind him as we are confident he can bring improvement and development to rural areas. The way I see it, he is the right man,” he reckoned.

To that end, James said once Lau is confirmed as the candidate to represent BN in Sibu parliamentary, he would introduce him to longhouse residents there.

“I encourage our ‘anembiak’ (charges) to rally behind him,” James quipped.

On Mar 10, SUPP Sibu branch unanimously recommended  Lau and Lanang MP Datuk Tiong Thai King to represent BN in the coming general election, expected to be held soon.
