JOHOR BAHARU: The phenomenon of students engaging in politics and holding office in organisations will become common with amendment to the Universities and University Colleges (Amendment) Act 2012.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the involvement of students in politics will be part of the political transformation towards the maturity of the people.

“We don’t have to focus too much focus on it as it will become common. In Malaysia, we have accepted that the maturity of the people and understanding of democracy has increased,” he said after launching the “Women In Social Enterprise” (WISE) programme and Community Entrepreneurship seminar here yesterday. He was commenting on the rally by some students demanding the repeal of the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) Act at Dataran Merdeka since yesterday.

“What needs to be emphasised by the people at the moment is the ability to separate truth from false so that it is consistent with demands for freedom.

On WISE, Khaled who is also member of parliament for Pasir Gudang said it aims to ensure that students and teachers contribute ideas and energy for community development.

The programme in collaboration with Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (AIM) will see 200 entrepreneurs adopting 400 students from institutions of higher learning (IPT) for one month training. — Bernama
