SIBU: Dato Sri Dr Benny Lee, who was reported by an English daily as a possible candidate picked by SUPP president Datuk Seri Peter Chin for Sibu constituency, denied uttering such a statement.

Lee, who is also the CEO of ITA College, said he had never mentioned that he was the one picked by Chin.

“A reporter approached me saying a source had claimed I was one of candidates picked for Sibu by the party president.

“The reporter also asked me whether I was prepared for it if the claims were true.”

Lee said that based on the reporter’s questions, he replied by likening the situation to an education field because his profession was in education.

“I told the reporters that if one had done one’s homework, there was no problem for one in an examination. I never said I was picked by Chin.”

Lee instead said whoever Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak picked it was for the victory of Barisan Nasional.

“I must stress here, whoever is picked to stand in Sibu for Barisan Nasional, I shall support and help, even if the candidate is Temenggong Vincent Lau.”

He said picking an election candidate for the BN was now more stringent.

“Now, the prime minister will collect information from the ground himself to decide on the best possible candidates.”

He said he was surprised the rumours were rife about him being picked as a candidate for BN-SUPP.

“After the news report was published, I was flooded with calls from friends. Some even gave me moral support.”

Lee said he was just an ordinary party member who had been involved in activities hosted by SUPP Dudong office.

He said he was the youth chief there.
