KAPIT: Kapit District Council (KDC) will be holding its first Local Agenda 21 programme this year from tomorrow to May 3 at Rumah Nyulang, Nanga Temalat in Song District, to be followed by a similar programme in Pelagus area at a later date.

Walikota of KDC Philimon Nuing told the press this recently.

“With such programme, the community will be able to participate in local government-led comprehensive efforts to promote environmental protection, economic prosperity and community well-being,” he said.

According to him, Local Agenda 21 is a process which facilitates sustainable development at the community level and is different from the civic assembly organised by other government agencies as it involves direct community participation in preserving and looking into the cleanliness of the environment.

“It is an approach based on participation which respects the social, cultural, economic and environmental needs of the present and future citizens of a community in all its diversity and which relates the community and its future to the regional, national and international community it is a part of,” he added.

In conjunction with the programme, many other activities that involve the participation of the community will also be carried out by the council, such as colouring contest for students of SK Nanga Temalat, a ‘gotong royong’ project to clean the longhouse compound and its surrounding areas, health screening by the Health Department and counter services mounted by various government agencies invited to the function like Medical, Agriculture and Community Development departments, Perkeso, NREB and the KDC itself.

Kapit MP Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi is expected to officiate at the function.

Also expected to be present are Katibas assemblyman Datuk Ambrose Blikau Enturan, Song District Officer Galong Luang, KDC secretary Henry Jalin Watt, Deputy Walikota Jefferson Jamit and several councillors.
