SIBU: Five Indonesian youths were arrested after they were caught attempting to steal two chainsaws worth about RM200,000 from an oil palm plantation in Tanjung Manis yesterday.

Plantation workers are said to have spotted the five loading the chainsaws into a white Kancil car early in the morning together with two local youths.

All seven youths bolted when they realised they were being watched.

The workers gave chase and a scuffle ensued, resulting in the five Indonesians sustaining minor injuries. The two local youths, however, managed to escape.

The five foreigners were later handed over to the police.

Meanwhile, the police were called after an unattended four-wheel drive vehicle was found locked with its engine running in front of a supermarket at Central Road here yesterday morning.

Police resorted to smashing one of the vehicle’s windows to gain access.

A diary found in the vehicle led police to contact the owner’s wife.

The puzzled wife gave police permission to drive the vehicle to the police station.

At about 11am, the owner claimed his vehicle back from police.

He is said to have told police that when he returned for his vehicle he was informed that the police had driven it away.
