One month’s jail, RM500 fine for stealing trays and vase

KUALA LUMPUR: A cook was sentenced to a month’s jail and RM500 fine, in default five days jail, by the magistrates’ court here yesterday for stealing trays and a vase from the Bankers Club last week.

Magistrate Zaki Asyraf Zubir handed down the sentence after K Surendran, 37, pleaded guilty to the charge.

He ordered Surendran to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest, which was last Wednesday.

He was charged with stealing seven stainless steel trays, worth RM280, and a decorative vase, worth RM400, at the Bankers Club, Level 21 and 22, Bangunan Amoda, Jalan Imbi, Dang Wangi here at 10.15pm on May 2 this year.

The charge, under Section 380 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum imprisonment for 10 years and fine, if found guilty.

In mitigation, Surendran, who was unrepresented, said he had to support a child and his mother and that when the offence was committed he was jobless and needed money to pay his child’s medical expenses.
