SHAH ALAM: More than 200 members of Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties staged a peaceful demonstration yesterday and urged the government to abolish toll collection at the Sungai Rasau and Batu Tiga toll plazas.

Shah Alam Umno Division deputy chief Zulkurnain Md Ruslan said the majority of the people here, particularly from the low-income group, consider the RM1.10 toll either way at the Batu Tiga plaza and RM1 toll either way at the Sungai Rasau plaza as a financial burden.

“Most of the Shah Alam residents working in Petaling Jaya or Kuala Lumpur have to fork out RM4.20 daily to and from work,” he told reporters during the demonstration at the Sungai Rasau toll plaza at about 11 am.

Zulkarnain, who is the BN coordinator for the Batu Tiga state constituency, said a memorandum was sent to the federal government in June last year on the matter, and he had been informed that it was with the Works Ministry.

He said the toll collection had been going on for more than 20 years and the concessionaire would have recouped the investment.

Many passing motorists expressed their support for the abolition of the toll by sounding their horn. — Bernama
