KUALA LUMPUR: A lawyer yesterday filed a suit against the Bar Council, its president Lim Chee Wee and two others, over the council’s recent extraordinary general meeting (EGM).

Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz filed the writ of summons through the legal firm Messrs. Azam Aziz & Co at the High Court registry here.

He named the Bar Council as the first defendant, while the Malaysian Bar, Lim and the secretary of the Bar Council, Tony Woon Yeow Thong, as the second, third and fourth defendant, respectively.

In the statement of claim, Mohd Khairul Azam, who is a member of the Bar Council and also the Malaysian Bar, claimed that the notice in calling the EGM, dated May 4, 2012, was not in accordance with the Legal Profession Act 1976.

Besides seeking a declaration to nullify the EGM, Mohd Khairul is also seeking an injunction preventing the defendants from writing or spreading anything in connection with the EGM. — Bernama
