Local faces trial for taking bets

KOTA KINABALU: A local man who denied taking all bookie?bets will be tried at the Magistrate Court here on July 9?0 this year.

Magistrate Norhamizah Shaiffuddin set the trial dates after Teoh Ah Seng, 54, pleaded not guilty to a charge under Section 6 (3) (a) of the Betting Act 1953, which carries a fine of not less than RM2,000 and not more than RM200,000 and a maximum jail of five years.

He allegedly committed the offence at a restaurant in Kampung Air here at 8.30pm on Dec 12 last year.

Teoh was granted RM8,000 bail with three local sureties.

In an unrelated case, a China woman was fined RM6,000, in default, two months?imprisonment for providing sex service to a man.

Xu Wang Mei, 40, admitted to soliciting for the purpose of prostitution at a hotel in Kampung Air here on May 14.

She was convicted under Section 372B of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum jail of one year’s jail or a fine or both.

Norhamizah also ordered the accused, who was represented by counsel Alex Lee, to be referred to the Immigration Department for further action.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Syahrin Ali told the court that during a raid, police seized several condoms and RM50 in cash from the room occupied by the woman.
