KUCHING: A creative approach should be used to promote the uniqueness of one’s customs and traditions, and Green Heights Mall Urban Roots pre-Gawai bazaar programme is a good example of an innovative programme to bring traditional cultures to the masses, says Mayor of Kuching City South Council (MBKS) James Chan.

The younger generation in this modern world is not interested in traditions, as they are too preoccupied with the latest technology, he added.

“This is why programme such as Urban Roots is a great platform to bring rural cultures for everyone to learn and appreciate,” said Chan at the Pre Gawai Urban Roots held at Green Heights Mall yesterday.

Chan added that foreign tourists are willing to pay to visit and learn about the culture of the people of Sarawak, thus it is timely for the people, especially the younger generation to learn more and appreciate the varieties of cultures and races in the state.

He called for everyone to celebrate the upcoming Gawai on a joyous mood, regardless of their race under the spirit of 1Malaysia.

The three-day event, from May 18 to 20, will see various activities apart from booths selling various Dayak delicacies.

The bazaar also offers traditional fashion outfit and tattoo booths.

With the aim to bring rural flavours to the urban setting, the three day ethnic bazaar will feature events such as pua kumbu demonstration, traditional Iban tattoo demonstration, cooking demonstration, Mini Kumang Gawai contest, and blow pipe contest.

Also present yesterday were Permodalan Sarawak Bhd general manager Allister Smith and Green Heights Mall central manager Sereni Linggi.
