Village’s homestay to host Gawai celebration

ALL SET: Among the facilities at Kampung Benuk’s homestay that will host the Gawai celebration on June 16.

KUCHING: The homestay at Kampung Benuk will have fun-filled cultural activities on June 16, when it holds its Gawai celebration.

The celebration will also include the handing over of the village’s homestay Culture Centre, costing about RM500,000, by Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk James Dawos, to the operator Cr Isabell Julau Mejat.

Minister of Tourism Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg will be the guest of honour at the event, who will also officiate at the centre.

Expected at the event are also Assistant Minister of Public Health Dr Jerip Susil and deputy State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn.

“The coming event promises to be a very interesting one, which will focus on our Bidayuh culture and traditions,” said Julau.

In the pipeline are demonstrations on Bidayuh traditional bamboo cooking with firewood, rubber tapping, weaving of rattan and bamboo products, chewing sireh leaves and beetle nut, and pounding and grinding padi grains.

Bidayuh traditional dance, food, games and blowpipes would also be showcased.

Also, a traditional Gawai ritual performance would also be held.
