KOTA KINABALU: A 23-year-old student was arrested by police for robbing a tourist of her gold necklace here recently.
The incident happened when the suspect, a college student, allegedly snatched the gold necklace of a 32-year-old British tourist along Jalan Gaya on May 19, around 6.20pm.
Deputy city police chief Superintendent M. Chandra said police and members of the public however managed to detain the suspect as he tried to flee.
“Police believe the suspect snatched the victim’s gold necklace as he needed the money to buy a new laptop after lost his old laptop,” he said at a press conference at the city police headquarters in Karamunsing here yesterday.
Chandra said the suspect has been remanded for five days and the case would be investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft.
Chandra thanked the public for their cooperation and assistance which led to the arrest of the suspect.
