MARUDI: Elliana Bakeri, a 20-year-old Malay/Iban lass was announced the winner of the Baram District Kumang Gawai 1Malaysia at the Baram Civic centre here yesterday, beating eight other contestants.
The competition was organised in conjunction with the Baram Districy Pre-Gawai dinner by the Baram District Office.
The event was officiated by the Deputy Minister of International Trade & Industry Dato Jacob Dungau Sagan, who was also the sponsor of the dinner.
Also present at the celebration were Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau Jok and several community leaders as well as 1,000 attendees.
Meanwhile the second and third placing were won by Siti Sabriah Jamali, 19, a Malay/Penan student and Rose Wendy Raong, 19, a Kelabit respectively.
Elliana brought home a cash prize of RM500.00, trophy, a hamper, and a sash while both runners-up brought home cash prizes too.
The subsidiary title was also won by Elliana Bakeri, whereas the best smile was won by Siti and the best catwalk went to Rose.
The other contestants were Paula Beremas Judan, Lina Nyambar, Melisa Ria Tuah, Karen Hasim, Juliana Paya Lenjau and Teresa Gawan.
Meanwhile, Tuai Rumah Undak Ruma was announced the Man of the Night while Siah was the Lady of the Night.
The Kumang Gawai prizes were given away by SAO Siti Rohannie Yusof who represented Datin Winnie Jolly Sagan.
At the function, Sagan presented MRP grants to six associations namely the Baram Free School Management Board (RM6,000), Baram Police Club (RM5,000), and JKKK Rumah Undak (RM8,000), Poyut/Lbk Nibong Area Development Committee (ADC) RM10,000, JKKK Rumah Jalang Linai (RM13,000) and JKKK Rumah Sayun RM10,000.
