Customs Dept urged to step up efforts to prevent money smuggling

BACHOK: Customs officers have been urged to intensify efforts to prevent money-smuggling activities at the Malaysia-Thai border.

Deputy Finance Minister Senator Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin said such action was imperative to prevent a recurrence of an
incident last week, whereby a Thai woman attempted to smuggle RM149,000.

He was speaking to reporters after launching the 1 Community 1 RTD (Road Transport Department) programme and Juara Nelayan at Tawang near here yesterday.

Also present were RTD director-general Datuk Solah Mat Hassan.

Awang Adek said the customs department should investigate the motive behind the attempt to smuggle the money into the country.

Last week, the Kelantan Anti-Smuggling Unit detained the woman as she rode a motorcycle, upon approaching the Rantau Panjang Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex.

The 40-year-old suspect was found to have tied up stacks of currency around her body while the remaining RM40,000 was kept in a carrier attached to the motorcycle. — Bernama
