KOTA KINABALU: A climber from Muar, Johor collapsed and died while descending Mount Kinabalu yesterday.

State CID chief SAC Omar Mammah said retiree Low Siang Lip, 59, collapsed at KM 4.5 of the summit trail at about 1pm.

He said rescue workers from Sabah Parks rushed Low to Ranau Hospital but he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Omar said no foul play was involved in the incident, and the cause of death had yet to be determined.

Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said he was informed of the incident by Sabah Parks staff who said all efforts to resuscitate the man, including CPR, were futile.

He said despite the damp and foggy conditions, the man was walking on an otherwise fine trail.

Thousands of tourists flock to the scenic Kundasang highlands each year to scale Malaysia’s highest mountain.
