SIBU: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Kanowit secretary Thomas Laja alleged that there was hanky-panky in the tender award for the upgrading of Nibong Tada-Rantau Dilang Road in Kanowit.

He said the project costing RM22 million was not given out via open tender to subcontractors.

“A main contractor was awarded the project but then he appointed a subcontractor to do the works,” he told reporters at PKR Sibu’s weekly press conference at its office in Pedada Road here yesterday.

According to Thomas, the tendering process for the project was carried out in October last year and the work was expected to be completed within 18 months after it had started.

He doubted whether the road was completed according to specifications as he claimed that the subcontractor spent only RM12 million out of the total project cost to tar seal the 9km road.

“There are more than 10 longhouses in Rantau Dilang and along the road who will benefit from the project when it is completed?

“But I doubt the quality of the road if it is to be upgraded using RM12 million,” he said.
