SHAH ALAM: Selangor state government owned Universiti Selangor (Unisel) feels relieved and grateful to all parties including the Federal Government and Higher Education Ministry for lifting the freeze on the Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loans to its students.

Unisel vice-chancellor Prof Dr Anuar Ahmad said the move would give the opportunity to more than 80 per cent of their 1,000 new intakes to pursue their studies.

“We received a call this morning requesting us to meet PTPTN chief executive Agus Cholan. Ten minutes into the discussion, we were given the letter stating the freeze has been lifted,” he said at a press conference yesterday.

The letter also stated that students may apply on-line starting last night or today, he informed.

Anuar added that they had met PTPTN last Wednesday to appeal the matter after being informed Unisel’s name was not in the list of higher education institutions eligible for the loans.

Asked for his opinion on the importance of PTPTN loans for students considering there were parties who wanted it abolished, Anuar responded,” Yes and no because it depends on the situation. It’s important for needy students but the loans also depend on the system, policies and changing environment according to the ruling government.” — Bernama
