PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak yesterday launched the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)-Sunway Line project which will provide transportation convenience for 500,000 residents around Bandar Sunway and Subang.

With an estimated cost of RM300 million, the project will be implemented under a public-private partnership between government-owned Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd (Prasarana) and private company Sunway Bhd and is expected to be completed by 2014.

In his opening speech, Najib said the project was in line with the government’s aspiration to improve the public transportation system under the National Key Results Area (NKRA), especially in major cities that needed an efficient and reliable transportation system.

“We have to make this transformation because we need a transportation system that can meet the demand of a modern city.

“Prior to this, we have introduced the LRT. Many skeptics say that it will not work, but now, the LRT can cater up to 450,000 passengers on daily basis, with a peak hour average of almost 85,000 passengers,” he said. — Bernama
