MIRI: More than 200 youths attended the YoUnite Against Crime awareness programme organised by Angkatan Zaman Mansang (Azam) at Mega Hotel here yesterday.

The programme is aimed at updating youths on the current situation in relation to crime in the state as well as to provide an avenue for youths to share their views on issues related to crime.

Besides creating a platform for the youth to voice their opinions on the issue, the programme also allows participants to discuss and contribute ideas for crime prevention in their communities.

According to Azam general secretary, Aishah Edris, the programme was also set to enhance other activities organised in conjunction with the state level Crime Prevention Month and the official closing of the state level Youth Week organised by the Ministry of Social Development.

She added that the participants comprise youths from school’s Crime Prevention Clubs, Jiran Muda, higher learning institutions and youth associations.

“YoUnite Against Crime covers various crime topic, as part of the effort to motivate youths to join hands and fight against crime,” she said adding crime especially in the cyber world is on the rise.

A similar programme was also held in Kuching last year and it received overwhelming response from youths there.

Aishah said the programme hopes to educate the community, especially the youth as it is one of the most important strategies for preventing crime.

“Too often, many people do not know what they can do to help reduce crime.

“When youths are aware about the types of crime taking place and the kind of environment that encourages crime, they will be more prepared to protect themselves, their family and their neighbourhood,” said Aishah.
