PARIS: Myanmar’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Thursday said she was ready to govern the country if her political party wins the legislative elections in 2015.

“Any party leader must be prepared for this possibility (of governing) if he or she really believes in the democratic process,” Xinhua news agency quoted Suu Kyi as saying.

The 67-year-old Myanmar opposition leader arrived in Paris on Tuesday for a three-day-visit, the last European country in her 17-day tour, seeking for economic and political support to back democratic transition in Myanmar.

The activist met with French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius and France’s main political figures before joining former president Nicolas Sarkozy to breakfast Thursday morning.

Suu Kyi’s trip came two months after her party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), overwhelmingly won the by-elections in April, while Suu Kyi herself won a seat of House of Representatives with Yangon region’s Kawhmu constituency. — BERNAMA
