NEW SYSTEM: The traffic lights in front of MBKS swimming pool is now installed with a digital countdown counter.

KUCHING: Kuching City South Council (MBKS) has installed a first digital countdown counter at the traffic lights near its swimming pool here.

Its mayor James Chan yesterday said the countdown would start 9 seconds before the green light turns red.

He explained that the intention was to alert road users when the traffic light was about to turn red.

“It is on trial. We will monitor it and get feedback from road users before making the decision to implement it in all areas under the jurisdiction of MBKS,” he told a press conference after chairing a full council meeting at MBKS headquarters here.

On the cost, he replied: “It is about few thousand ringgit.”

Compared with the fixed timer system used in other areas in the Peninsula, Chan said the system MBKS was trying now was more flexible.

“The sensor system of traffic light is still working with the installation of the digital countdown counter,” he said.

He added that road users would waste no time waiting for the traffic light to turn green when traffic was low with the sensor system.
