Nephew shoots uncle by mistake in hunting trip

KUCHING: A villager from Sri Aman was admitted to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) here for treatment after he was mistakenly shot by his nephew during a hunting trip on Thursday.

The 47-year-old victim from Kampung Ria sustained two shotgun pellet wounds in his lungs following the 8pm incident at the edge of a jungle some two hours’ motorcycle ride from his village.

According to family members, the nephew had exited the jungle first and was waiting next to his motorcycle for his uncle to emerge when he spotted a pair of ‘glowing’ eyes about 100 feet away.

Thinking it was a wild animal, he discharged his shotgun and only realised he had in fact shot his uncle when he heard the latter scream in pain.

Terrified that he may have killed his own uncle, the nephew sped off to the Sri Aman district police headquarters and surrendered himself.

The victim, however, not only survived being shot but also managed to make the two-hour ride on his motorcycle back to his village before collapsing in front of his family.

The unconscious victim was quickly rushed to the Sri Aman hospital and was subsequently referred to the SGH here for further treatment

Sri Aman district police chief DSP Mat Jusoh Mohamad confirmed the incident when contacted by The Borneo Post yesterday, adding that the nephew is currently being held pending further investigation.
