Chieng sisters shine as SMK Batu Lintang in the lead

KUCHING: Sukma-bound swimmers Annie Chieng and Angela Chieng were in terrific form on the first day of the second Samarahan-Kuching Inter-School Swimming Championship at Samarahan Sports Complex swimming pool yesterday, bagging 11 gold medals between them to put SMK Batu Lintang ahead of 10 other secondary schools.

The younger of the Chieng sisters Angela, 14, was the star performer, splashing to gold in five individual events and one relay event.

Angela’s first gold came from the Girls 13-14 200m individual medley where she clocked a time of 2:41.13s.

Her other gold medals were won in the 50m breaststroke (39.35s), 100m breaststroke (1:18.62s), 50m butterfly (33.38s), 100m freestyle (1:07.50s) and 50m freestyle relay.

Annie captured her five golds in the Girls 15-18 200m individual medley, 50m breaststroke, 100m backstroke, 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle.

Two other swimmers who also shone for SMK Batu Lintang were Tan Choon Hoe who won four gold medals and Anson Go who won the Boys 13-14 59m butterfly in 29.91s.

In the primary school section, Hii Puong Hou was outstanding with the five golds he won for SJK Chung Hua Batu 4 ½.

The gold medals came from the Boys 11-12 200m individual medley, 50m breaststroke, 100m backstroke, 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle.

Adrian Chua Wei Kiat of SJK Chung Hua No 5 sparkled with four gold medals he won in the Boys 10 and under 50m breaststroke, 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle and 200m individual medley to help his school lead the medals tally with eight gold medals.

A total of 146 swimmers including 59 girls from 11 secondary schools, 20 primary schools and two kindergartens in the Kuching and Samarahan Divisions are taking part in the championships that ends today.

The meet was opened by Kotas special advisor Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and  organised by Kota Samarahan Amateur Swimming Association.
