KUCHING: The Sarawak Skills Training Centre (PPKS) will set up a university college for technical training soon via a partnership with a local university.
According to its executive director Baharuddin Abdullah, PPKS had identified Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) as its partner to assist in setting up the new university college including its courses and programmes.
“PPKS also had identified a suitable site located at Demak Laut and I am confident that we can turn this into a reality in another two years’ time,” said Baharuddin.
He was speaking at the PPKS/International College of Advance Technology (ICATS) carnival at the Old Court House near Kuching Waterfront yesterday.
Baharuddin added that apart from the setting of the university college, PPKS will also open its new training centre in Bintulu.
“The new centre will be located near the Samalaju Industrial area and courses offered will be tailored according to the local industry demand,” he said.
He added that it is PPKS vision to produce capable individuals in the vocational and technical sector who can meet the current job demand in the state and to equip the state with adequate manpower for the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE).
“We at PPKS does not only focus on producing skilled individuals, we also trained them to be able to work on their own by exposing them direct to the industry,” he said, adding that PPKS is sending 10 of their students for industrial training in India soon.
Baharuddin later at the event received a mock cheque for RM10,000 for Petra Energy Berhad to become PPKS member and partner, where Petra can send their staffs for technical training and other related courses.
Apart from registration booth for new students, the carnival also saw career interview, counselling session and exhibition by participating companies apart from ‘Kem Kemahiran’, an outreach programme where PPKS provides an insight into programmes offered by both PPKS and ICATS.
