SIBU: The commissioning of telecommunication towers in Lubok Melapi, Bukit Selalih and Nanga Bitan in Sungai Ngemah, Kanowit, is considered godsend news to its 5,000 residents.

Penghulu Ambrose Digat said they had been waiting for the towers to be fully operational since they were set up earlier this year.

A total of 45 longhouses in Nanga Ngungun, Nanga Bat and Nanga Nirok, two primary schools, one health clinic and some Chinese residents at Nanga Ngemah would benefit from the project, he said.

“To us this is another proof that the Barisan Nasional (BN) government is honouring its promises to the people.

“We are very happy and thankful to have this facility here,” he said when contacted by The Borneo Post yesterday.

He said the people must continue to support the government so that more development projects could be implemented, especially in the rural areas.

A resident of Rumah Sali Kirak in Nanga Ngungun, Rosnah Renggan, said she was happy she could call her sisters and friends from anywhere now.

Before, it was very hard for the people in Nanga Ngungun to contact their family members, she recalled.

“Then, network signal was only available at a spot located about 20 minutes’ walk from the resettlement area.

“Now I can even make a call from my bedroom,” she enthused.

She hoped hand phone top-up card sellers would not cash in on the development to jack up the prices of their products.
