‘Reduce RON95 petrol price as well’

KUCHING: The government should reduce the retail price of RON95 petrol as the global crude oil price has dipped to US$87 per barrel, said Batu

Lintang assemblyman See Chee How.

He told a press conference yesterday that the government had justified increasing the RON95 retail price from RM1.85 per litre to RM1.90 per litre on March 3, 2010, when the global crude oil price climbed to US$113 per barrel.

“Therefore, it now justifies the necessary adjustment to lower the RON95 retail price by 10 sen per litre to ensure that more Malaysians will benefit from the plunge of the global oil price,” said the Parti Keadilan Rakyat state vice-chairman.

He said a quick survey at petrol stations located between Mile 3 and Mile 6 Jalan Penrissen yesterday found that 85 per cent of drivers used RON95.

On Wednesday, the government announced that the retail price of RON97 would drop by 20 sen to RM2.60 per litre from yesterday.

Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah said the price was determined by market forces.

The retail price of RON95 and diesel, which are subsidised by the government, remain unchanged.

Under Budget 2012, the government spent RM17 billion in subsidies for petroleum products.
