NATIONAL swimmer Erika Kong delivered the golden cheer in the swimming camp yesterday as the state contingent captured one gold, one silver and two bronze medals on the sixth day of competition at Sukma XV.
The 17-year-old Erika won the women’s 400m individual medley in a time of 4: 58.00s beating Kuala Lumpur Ong Ming Fen and teammate Angela Chieng into second and third place.
However, the first of the three medals won at Wisma Belia swimming pool came from Welson Sim who finished second in the men’s 200m freestyle. In diving, Sukma debutant Carlysle Chan grabbed the bronze in the women’s 1m springboard.
Meanwhile, the state football team became the first team to pack their bags even before the competition had ended after losing 1-2 to home team Pahang in their fi nal Group A match.
Coach Mike Leigh said his boys had done their best and was happy with their performance despite of the disappointing campaign in Kuantan. Sarawak started encouragingly with a 1-0 win over Pulau Pinang but suffered a 6-1 whipping at the hands of Terengganu in the second match.
“The boys are still young and need more time to mature as good players. They have a bright future and apart from two of them, they can still play for the next two Sukma,” he said after the match.
He said although the players were tired and some of them injured, they still gave a very good fi ght against Pahang.
At SMK Tanah Putih, the state women’s volleyball team lost 2-3 to Johor and coach Moh Wun Ming was red-carded and evicted from the court after making two protests in the refereeing decisions by the match umpire.
The men spikers scored their first win by edging Johor 3-2 at SRJK Chung Ching hall. Sarawak men shuttlers bounced back from their 1-3 defeat to Selangor on Saturday by beating Melaka 4-1 in their second team match at Stadium Utama SUKPA yesterday.
Kelvin Jee gave Sarawak the first point when he beat Welson Lim 21-19, 14-21 and 21-18 in the fi rst singles. Adam Law came back from one set down to beat Muhammad Zulkhakimi Mohd Talhir 16-21, 21- 17 and 21-19 in the second singles while Andy Ng emerged 17-21, 24-22, 21-16 winner over Aaron Chia.
Welson Lim-Ow Yao Han got a point back for Melaka when they beat Jong Wee Fook-Kong Sing Kiat 21-14, 21-14 in the fi rst doubles. Sarawak wrapped up the 4-1 victory when the second doubles pair of Lai Zing Neng and Roni Tan overcame Aaron Chia-Tay Kok Hau 21-18, 21-12.
