SIBU: The Chancellor of the University of Canterbury (UC), Christchurch New Zealand paid a courtesy call on Sibu Mayor Datuk Tiong Thai King yesterday.

Together with the Chancellor Dr John Wood were his wife Rosie Wood, John Wong, Graeme Steven (alumni and development manager) and wife Robyn Steven.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairman Daniel Ngieng and Malaysian Alumni (Sibu Chapter) advisor Hii Ching Chiong were also at Tiong’s office to welcome the guests.

The two-day visit is to meet the university’s alumni, friends, university partners, and parents of current students in five cities across Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, Kuching, Sibu, Kota Kinabalu and Miri.

Another purpose of the visit was to announce the proposed New Malaysian Alumni Scholarships in Sibu during the alumni dinner last night.

Through the proposed new Malaysia Alumni Chapter Scholarships, UC will establish new city-based annual Malaysian alumni scholarships of NZ$10,000 each for an initial three-year period.

The scholarships aim to attract local students from each city to enroll at UC.

UC is expected to offer the first scholarships for enrolment in 2013. The delegation will visit Sibu Central Market, Methodist Secondary School and Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) today.
