KOTA KINABALU: Sabah and Brunei will work together towards further collaboration in the information and communications technology within the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) sub-region.
Two memoranda of understanding (MoU) were signed here Tuesday night to promote cooperation in ICT development and multimedia initiatives that would mutually benefit them.
The first MoU was signed by the Permanent Secretary in the Sabah Resource Development and Information Technology Ministry Bruno Vun and Permanent Secretary of Brunei’s Communications Ministry Datuk Paduka Awang Alaihuddin Awang Mohamad Taha.
The second MoU was inked by SEDCO Communications (S Comm) Sdn Bhd’s chief executive officer Jasmi Adnan Thien and Brunei International Gateway (BIG) Sdn Bhd general manager Mohd Salleh Aji.
Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai, who was also State Minister for Resource Development and Information Technology, witnessed the signing.
The MoUs, the first step before partnering with the Philippines to focus on Mindanao in the southern region, was to provide communication infrastructure hybrids to enjoy high-speed international capacity access and service roll-out between Sabah and Brunei.
By tapping into BIG’s capacity, S Comm would be able to provide an alternative to existing service providers in the ICT field, thus creating competition and better price-quality match.
The partnership also aimed to help implement the BIMP-EAGA Rink, a project to link up the sub-region either through fibre optics, satellite or microwave.
Upon completion, the project was expected to propel the BIMP-EAGA region into a central hub for investments, promote socio-economic development and improve the people’s quality of life. — Bernama
