City Hall staff receive police training

KEPAYAN: Twenty-four enforcement officers from the City Hall were yesterday awarded certificates after successfully undergoing a week-long training at the Malaysia Royal Police Training Centre (Pulapol) recently.

The officers who underwent basic enforcement training were the third batch of trainees sent by the City Hall to Pulapol, said Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir at the closing ceremony of the course.

He explained that the City Hall had decided to send their enforcement staff for training at Pulapol as it wanted the officers to have the qualities that would be required of them when dealing with members of the public when carrying out their duties.

He said that the officers were taught to be always smart in their outlook, to be respectful and be highly disciplined.

“If they receive instructions on their daily duties, I am confident that they will be able to carry them out effectively and enforce the City Hall’s Minor Ordinance,” he said.

Abidin then instructed his enforcement officers to be attired accordingly when they are carrying out their duties.

“I will not tolerate any enforcement officers who are not appropriately attired in their uniform when they are carrying out their work. This requirement is in line with the Enforcement Officers Uniform/Attire Rules and Procedures booklet,” he said.

In his speech, Abidin also thanked the Royal Malaysian Police for its assistance in training the City Hall’s personnel as well as the assistance in various activities that have been carried out by the City Hall.

He added that City Hall had collaborated with the police and other related agencies in carrying out their ‘pocket operation’ which began on February 7, this year and ended last month.

During the operation, 405 arrests were made and 745 cartons of untaxed cigarettes, 5,566 pirated VCDs and DVDs and nine fraudulent handphones were confiscated.

They also arrested five couples for close proximity and eight sex workers.

Additionally, they also stopped the spread of advertisements made by unlicensed money lenders, he said.

In another development, Abidin said 26,830 persons were compounded a total of RM509,506 for offences under the Minor Ordinance between January and May, this year.

He also said that 308 cases were opened by the City Hall’s enforcement department between January and May this year.
