Kapit Hash Club holds 3rd anniversary run

CHALLENGING: Hashers have to use the bamboo raft to cross a river.

KAPIT: A group of 86 hash house harriers from outside Kapit took part in the third anniversary special hash run organised by Kapit Hash Club on Saturday afternoon.

Consisting of men and women and even boys and girls they ran under the canopy of the lush tropical forest, across fi elds and streams, ascending and descending rolling hills.

They were all driven by their love for nature and adventure.

Among them was a middleaged lady from Kuching, who expressed jubilation despite being tired after running for three hours.

A 53-year-old off-shore supervisor working for a petroleum and gas company in Brunei, Philip Chin, said he was 21 years old when he joined the hash run.

Since then, he said, his footsteps had covered Brunei, Labuan, Sabah, Malacca, Pahang and Sarawak.

Joined by 12 other hashers from Brunei, he said this was his fi rst run in Kapit, and enjoyed meeting and making new friends.

The oldest hasher, 58-year-old Aeron Wong, a contract mechanic attached to Tractors Malaysia Bhd, Sibu came with his wife.

He said he began hashing three years ago and joins the run in Sibu thrice a week to keep fi t.

Toh Kok Hua of Miri, in his 30s, said the hash runs help one to develop discipline and selfconfi dence as one is pushed ‘on on’ till the fi nishing line.

First time participant 20-yearold Devi Hamdo, however, said it was a gruelling experience.

The third anniversary run was held along the Kapit waterfront, around the hills and Sungai Seranau, and attracted some 200 hashers.

They were ferried across the Rajang River by an express boat after a picnic lunch.

They were given a briefi ng on the dos and don’ts by organising secretary David Wong Hau Ching.

Later in the evening, they were feted to a buffet dinner of local delicacies.

Present were Kapit youth and sports offi cer Jack Janda, grandmaster Cr Tan Peng Chuan and vice-grandmaster Kimiko Soon.
