SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) yesterday reminded Muslims in the state not to be fooled by individuals who pose as amil (collectors) and go door-to-door collecting tithes.
Its chairman, Datuk Mohamad Adzib Mohd Isa said, though such cases were regarded small, the public needs to be more alert by requesting to see verification cards issued by the Selangor Zakat Board (LZS) to 2,500 amil and assistant amil in the state.
He said it was encouraged for tithe payment to be made at mosques, suraus or 24 zakat counters opened statewide throughout Ramadhan, including public holidays.
“We have counters at all LZS branches and several shopping malls to make it easier for people to fulfill their responsibility of paying tithes this Ramadhan,” he said, adding that the tithing rate in Selangor this year was RM7.
Mohamad Adzib said they estimated RM18 million in tithes to be collected from about 2.6 million Muslims in Selangor this year, an additional RM1 million compared to last year.
A total of RM17.53 million in tithes will be distributed among 22,923 poor families in Selangor in conjuction with the fasting month and Aidilfitri celebrations this year. — Bernama
