KUCHING: The Stampin Chapter of Malaysia Red Crescent (MRC) has come up with posters on the proper way to wash hands.

Minister of Welfare, Women and Family Development Datuk Fatimah Abdullah lauded them saying that the basic rule of keeping hands clean need to be re-emphasised from time to time.

“Going back to the basics doesn’t mean we are going backwards,” she said when MRC Stampin committee members made a courtesy call to her office at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here yesterday.

“It’s a very simple thing, but if observed, you can imagine the impact it will have on bringing down infection and the amount of money spent on medical treatment. Hand washing is especially more important for food handlers and families with small children.

According to the chapter’s spokesperson Kelvin Wan, they would print between 1,000 and 2,000 posters to be placed in places like restaurants, coffee shops, toilets, schools and petrol stations.

“In kindergartens and primary schools, we want to place one poster in every classroom,” he said.

The posters detail the seven-step hand washing process with photos acquired from the Health Department.

The Hand Washing Awareness Campaign is organised as part of the chapter’s community project to educate and create awareness the public.

“Knowing the importance of washing hands will help one to avoid infectious diseases. People who work in hospitals and other health-related places have to keep a strict check on hygiene.

“One must remember that even at home, we get infected with diseases due to bacteria, so it is necessary for us to teach our family, especially children, the proper method of washing our hands,” he said.
