KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Youth chief, Tan Kai, said that, if nominated, he would be going to the forthcoming general election as an underdog candidate.
He acknowledged that his party was at the lowest point in its 53-year history and they were facing an uphill task to gain the voters’ support in many of the urban seats.
“Nevertheless, we (members) will continue with our struggle and bring some changes to rejuvenate the party to its former glory years and gain back the predominantly Chinese supporters in the state,” he said when contacted yesterday.
Tan said the party accepted the results of the last state election but they would defend their existing six parliamentary seats.
He admitted that he might be the sacrificial lamb in the coming election but whatever it was they would not let the opposition have an easy ride this time.
“We are a component of Barisan Nasional (BN) party and we cannot allow the opposition to win without a fight.
“Until and when parliament is dissolved and the election date is announced we will continue to strengthen our party the best we can to ensure we have a good chance seats that we have lost,” he said.Tan said he was realistic about his chances in Bandar Kuching but for the moment he said their focus was to ensure that the party continued with its political struggle and bring new bloods to champion the party’s direction and objectives.
“The party continues to recruit members from all walks of life and it also encourages young professionals to join in the struggle.
“The members are very proactive who are able to independently strategies, synergise and solve their own problems.
“We will work and campaign hard for a win in Bandar Kuching,” he said.
