Dept on full alert to combat Aedes mosquitoes

SIBU: The state Health Department is now on full alert to combat the Aedes mosquitoes to prevent any outbreak of dengue fever.

Its director Dr Zulkifli Jantan said recently this included going door-to-door to check for potential Aedes breeding ground, and destroying their habitat.

“Yes, the department is already on full alert to fight the Aedes mosquitoes to prevent any dengue fever outbreak. We have even intensified our public awareness programme to create heightened awareness among the public, especially among rural folk on the dangers pose by Aedes,” he said.

He was asked on measures taken following Bernama report that Sarawak was among the four states recording an increase in the disease.

The national news agency quoted Health director-general Datuk Seri Dr Hassan Abdul Rahman as saying Terengganu had the highest increase for the week, with an increase of four cases or 31 per cent, followed by Johor with three cases while Perlis and Sarawak recorded an increase of two cases.

Dr Zulkifli said the increase in the number of cases of dengue for the state was small for now, adding dry spell did contribute to the hike in part.

“We have beefed up door-to-door check to ensure house compounds are free of Aedes breeding ground. Those found to have Aedes mosquito larva would be slapped with a RM500 compound,” he warned.

Turning to the public, he advised them to check their compounds regularly to destroy any mosquitoes’ breeding ground and to remove receptacles that can collect water. He said a concerted effort was needed to fight the disease, keeping it at bay.

Asked on fatalities, he said there was none thus far for this year.

On another front, he said the inspection at Ramadan stalls was carried out to check for food safety and quality.
