KUCHING:  Some 3,000 packets of ‘bubur lambuk’ were distributed to the public at the Stutong Ramadan bazaar here yesterday as part of the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) community outreach project.

Hundreds of people lined up at around 4pm to receive the porridge distributed by mayor James Chan, councillors and community leaders. The project is part of the council’s community outreach programme under its ‘My City My Home’ initiative.

The amount distributed outnumbered the total in last year’s programme. Chan told reporters that he hoped to distribute some 4,000 packets next year.

Some RM7,000 were also raised from a collective fund from the public to realise this year’s project.

“I am very happy with the number of packets that we are distributing, the turn out by our councillor members and of course the good respond from the public. This initiative expects councillors to do their job and be closer to the people.

“With the increase of 1,000 packets this year, we hoped to raise the amount to 4,000 next year,” he said when met before the start of the distribution.

The rainy weather during the distribution did not deter the spirits of the 30 MBKS personnel and community leaders who turned up to distribute the ‘bubur lambuk’. The distribution station was located at the middle of the bazaar near the prayer room.

The Stutong Ramadan Bazaar, situated at the car park of Stutong Market, housed a total of 137 stalls selling various food and drink items.
